Fur-Bearer Defenders & Sea Shepherd: Protecting Our Wildlife

It’s 2016. It’s 2016 and the fight against killing wildlife for the almighty dollar continues.

We don’t often (if at all) hear stories of paint-throwing on those wearing fur coats these days, however, the abominable fur industry is still alive and kicking. And, our ocean dwelling friends are no better off than our furry friends and are also suffering at the hands of humans.

In spite of the claims made by the industries that profit from these practices, or government agencies that muzzle researchers and scientists, these barbaric practices and industries are NOT humane.

I’m passionate about animals, all animals, domesticated and wild. Wildlife was NOT put on this earth for humans to abuse, capture, train, profit from, or to entertain us. There is nothing entertaining about watching an orca whale swim around a fishbowl or jump out and touch a ball with its nose. With all the bad press, why anyone continues to waste their money on places like Sea World and Marineland is beyond logic. Do you want your kids to learn about whales? Well, guess what, a whale in captivity does not behave like normal whales do. Take them on a whale-watching trip to witness whales in their natural environment for an experience of a lifetime!

I’m writing today to draw your attention to two organizations that are working for the protection of wildlife.

Fur-Bearer Defenders was founded in 1953. The organization “works to end the commercial fur trade and promotes co-existence with wildlife.” A couple of their major campaigns are “Make Fur History” and “Urban Wildlife.” You’ll find information about what they do here.

While perusing the Fur-Bearer Defenders site for this post, I happened upon a blog post written yesterday. And it shocked me. Did you know that it’s legal to import and sell dog and cat fur here in Canada? I was well aware of countries that regularly consume dog and cat meat and I fully support organizations like Humane Society International and Soi Dog that are working to end this practice. However, I was not aware that there are companies in Canada importing the pelts of these poor creatures. It’s no more imaginable to me to go into a store and purchase a cat- or dog-fur trimmed coat, as it is to sit down to a meal of dog meat! I’m certain I’m not in the minority in feeling this way. Where is the market for such products?

Please take a moment to sign the official government petition to “demand a ban on the import and sale of dog and cat fur in Canada.” Your voice is needed. (Please be sure to complete the process when you sign the petition. Thank you.)

Sea Shepherd, established in 1977, “is an international non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organization. Our mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species.” Get full details of their worldwide campaigns here.

Founder, Paul Watson, came to my attention while watching the documentary, How to Change the World. It recounts the story of how Greenpeace was established and all the people that made it happen. Paul Watson’s no-holds-barred, tell-it-like-it-is, passionate style was clear in the documentary as well as in his commentaries and editorials found on the Sea Shepherd site. I want to draw your attention a one in particular written in October of last year. In it, he succinctly articulates how those in denial are bastardizing terms and words as a way of justifying their destruction. It’s worth the read.
